The Newest Procedure In Gastric Surgery

While gastric surgery has become a common occurrence among morbidly obese patients, some people are even too obese to undergo any of these surgical procedures safely. The newest form of gastric surgery is the gastric sleeve.

In recent years the gastric bypass was used to help people who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise. The surgical procedure actually create a smaller area to handle food intake as the stomach area is cut off or stapled closed.

Lap band surgery quickly became even more popular as it is a quicker and less invasive procedure. It actually entails the placement of a silicone band around the stomach and can be adjusted on a regular basis by your doctor. The more area that is banded off the less food that the stomach can accept. As the patient becomes full quicker on less food her or she are able to lose weight quicker and easier than in the past.

But in many cases it was not safe for extremely obese people to undergo either of these two procedures. The newest form of gastric surgery is called the gastric sleeve and is a safer procedure for people who are high risk for other gastric surgeries.

The gastric sleeve surgery is done laparoscopically through a small tube and a tiny camera to guide the doctor. The surgeon removes about 60 percent of the patient’s stomach and staples off the remaining portion.

After the patient has lost enough weight to reduce their risk of additional surgery the bypass or lap band surgeries can be performed to complete the weight loss objectives. Anyone who is at high risk for surgical procedures and has a body mass index of more than 60 is a good candidate for the gastric sleeve procedure. Check with your bariatric surgeon to see if he or she has begun using this new procedure.
